Want to make your iPhone calls sound better? Check Out This Secret Part

This 2023 iPhone feature is easy to miss, but it can help your calls sound better.

Apple put out the first public beta of iOS 26 on July 24. It added call screening and other features to developers’ and beta users’ iPhones. The other person on the call can hear you better even if you’re not a developer or beta user. You can use a secret iPhone feature to do this. Voice Isolation is the name of this feature.

Voice Isolation was added by Apple in iOS 16.4 in 2023. Along with Wide Spectrum, the tech company added it to FaceTime calls with iOS 15 in 2021. For now, only Voice Isolation is offered for normal phone calls.

Voice Isolation blocks out background noises that are annoying and can cut off your calls when it’s turned on. On a business call or a catch-up call with friends, that way, your dog’s barking or work outside your house won’t bother you.

Being on a call is the only way to turn on Voice Isolation because it’s not in the Settings menu. Once Voice Isolation is turned on, it will stay on for all calls until you turn it off yourself.

How to turn on Voice Isolation:

  1. Open the Phone app.
  2. To get to your Control Center while you’re on the phone, swipe down from the top right part of your screen.
  3. Near the top of the screen, tap Phone Controls.
  4. Click on Voice Isolation.

To turn off Voice Isolation, do what you did above and then tap Standard in Phone Controls. If you do this, your microphone will go back to its original setting.

What does Wide Spectrum mean?

In the Phone Controls, you’ll find Wide Spectrum next to Voice Isolation. Voice Isolation blocks out background sounds, but Wide Spectrum boosts background sounds without changing your voice. When more than one person is on the same phone line, Wide Spectrum can help. Which means everyone can hear, not just the person on the phone.

Wide Spectrum can only be used for FaceTime calls right now. Since the tool is still in Phone Controls, it might one day be possible to use it for calls as well.
