Dubai’s Delano
The opening of the Delano brand in Dubai might be just as revolutionary as the 1995 opening of the first Delano Miami. At the new Bluewaters complex, which has boldly moved into one wing of the former Caesars Palace, close to sister property Banyan Tree Dubai, the Miami mothership looms enormous. The towering hedges that surrounded the original Miami hotel were said to have blocked out views of the then-unsavory Collins Avenue, but they also served as a practical means of creating a sense of mystery. Upon arriving at the hotel in Dubai, visitors are greeted by a verdant wall. The halls of the Dubai hotel are made softer by the white, semi-transparent drapes that were originally draped on either side of the Miami entry (another clever move in the game of “what lies beyond?”). The walls of the guest rooms feature pictures of the original hotel’s gardens and pool, and each day a fresh apple is brought to your room. Denman, Selina

Dubai’s Burj Al Arab Jumeirah Hotel An outdoor infinity pool
Thanks to Burj Al Arab The Jumeirah Hotel
Burj Al Arab Jumeirah $$$
Souvenir shops, postcards, and the camera roll of almost every visitor to the city all feature the iconic image of the sail-inspired building, which stands alone on its own specially constructed island right off Jumeirah Beach. Along with the Palm Jumeirah and Burj Khalifa, it represents Dubai’s never-ending aspirations. The main hotel in Jumeirah is commemorating 25 years since it first opened its lavish doors this year. Jumeirah Burj Al Arab is the opposite of quiet luxury, if that’s the current hotel style. The 198 suites are all duplexes, and a grand staircase with gold embellishments welcomes visitors. Hermès provides full-size toiletries, including eaux de perfume for both sexes. The opulent Gilt Sky Bar is one of eight eateries on the premises. The gem in this hotel’s crown is the Talise Spa, which is a destination unto itself with its indoor pool surrounded by vibrant mosaic pillars. Prideaux, Sophie

Meliá Collection, Meliá Desert Palm
Meliá Desert Palm draws a diverse range of customers with its mix of country club, catwalk, and kids’ club elements. With three full-size polo fields, a practice field, a polo academy, livery stables for over 300 horses, a riding school, and peacocks, the resort, which is part of the Desert Palm Polo Club, combines Middle Eastern hospitality with South American hacienda design. I exhale with relief as soon as I check into a new Al Waha Family Villa-cum-hideaway. The home, which is 585 square meters, features a large living area that is dominated by a plump, green velvet modular sofa. To one side of the room is a full-size kitchen, and by patio windows is a dining table with director’s chairs that sit comfortably six people. The villa’s furnishings, which feature dark wood with emerald green, orange, and terracotta highlights, pale marble floors, and voile curtains at the floor-to-ceiling windows, feel well crafted and wonderfully cool after the heat outside.
